ARPICO and Andrea Calì PRESENT:
The Broadway Subway Project: Building a better future while respecting an affordable present
Italian engineer Andrea Calì, Deputy Project Director for the Broadway Subway Project in Vancouver, will share with us his experience on this and other international tunnelling projects as representative of Ghella, an Italian company and international leader in the field of underground boring.
After an introduction on the exciting and challenging project currently underway along the Broadway corridor in Vancouver, the event will focus on the relationship between the Project Team and the Local Community, and the policies and strategies in place to ensure proper information and commitment during the execution of the works.
Andrea and his Communication Director, Angela Salehi, will share with us interesting and funny anecdotes they had to manage during these first 3 years as well as all the actions taken to keep the Vancouver community life affordable along the corridor notwithstanding the impacts generated by the works.
Andrea Calì obtained his summa cum laude Master's degree in Civil Engineering – Infrastructures and Transportation in 1998 from the University of Catania (Italy), Faculty of Engineering.
He spent the first 13 years of his professional career freelance, as an expert of transport planning in the design of Regional and National Transport Plans in Italy and the European Community.
In 2011, Andrea was hired by Salcef SpA, an Italian company leader in Railway Construction, to develop infrastructure projects of national relevance in Africa. After being Deputy Country Manager in Mozambique and Project Manager in Egypt for the renewal of 450 km of one of the oldest Railways in the world, Andrea was appointed as Business Development Director to represent Salcef in the development of new projects in 5 different continents, some involving Italian National Agencies.
In 2018, Andrea was hired by Ghella SpA, one of the main Italian Construction Companies active on the international market and leader in the tunnelling industry, to lead their main billion-dollar-budget infrastructure projects.
After his first assignment as Construction Director on the Folloline Project, the largest transport project and the longest high-speed railway tunnel in Norway, Andrea was appointed Deputy Project Director for the Broadway Subway Project in Vancouver, an extension of the existing Millennium Line from VCC-Clark Station to a new terminus at Arbutus Street. The project includes the design and construction of 5.7 kilometers of new network, 5 km of which will be underground twin tunnels, built with two EPB TBMs with an excavation diameter of 6 meters, and 6 new underground stations.
